Why Your ClickFunnels Follow Up Isn't Working (And How to Fix It)

If someone opts in on your funnel and gets one email, then nothing, you don't have a follow up sequence. You have a single email with a sequence-shaped hole after it. This is the single most common gap we find opening a new ClickFunnels account, and it's usually the fastest one to fix, most owners can have a real sequence live within a week.

The cost of the gap is bigger than it feels. Email follow up done properly typically accounts for 25 to 30% of total funnel revenue. Not from the first email, from the ones after it. Skipping the sequence doesn't lose you a little polish; it loses you roughly a quarter of what the funnel should earn.

Why one email isn't enough

Most people don't buy on first touch, and it has nothing to do with your offer. They opted in on their phone in a queue. They got interrupted. They wanted it but payday is Thursday. A lead who isn't ready today might be ready in three days or three weeks, and without a sequence, you're relying entirely on them remembering you and coming back on their own. They won't. Not because they didn't care, because nobody's inbox works that way.

The sequence's job is to still be in the conversation when readiness arrives. That's it. Every email after day one is a lottery ticket for the moment their circumstances change.

The 4-email minimum viable sequence

You don't need 30 emails and a flowchart. This structure covers the essentials and can be written in an afternoon:

Once this converts, extend it: a weekly value email keeps the list warm indefinitely, and past buyers can branch into their own sequence. But the first week is where most of the recoverable revenue lives.

Where this lives in ClickFunnels

Two routes. ClickFunnels' built-in follow up tooling (available on supporting plans) handles this natively, sequences trigger on opt-in, tagged by which funnel they came through. Alternatively, connect a dedicated email platform (ActiveCampaign, HubSpot, Klaviyo and similar all integrate directly or via Zapier) and let it own the sending. The mechanism matters far less than two things: the trigger actually fires on opt-in, and someone has tested it end to end.

Behavior beats broadcast

The upgrade after the basic sequence exists: make it respond to what people do. Someone who clicked the pricing link in email 2 shouldn't get the same email 3 as someone who hasn't opened anything, one is warm, one needs re-engaging. Even simple branching (clicked vs. didn't, opened vs. didn't) meaningfully outperforms one-size-fits-all. But this is step two. A basic sequence that exists beats a sophisticated one that's still being planned.

The check almost nobody does

Open your own funnel right now, as a stranger, and opt in with a fresh email address. Wait 48 hours. See what actually lands in your inbox, on time, formatted correctly, links working. Most funnel owners have never once done this. If what shows up isn't what you'd want to receive, it's not what your leads are getting either, and now you know exactly what to fix first.
